How we rate deposit risk

Every Decor Ranch rating answers one question: if you do this and undo it on move-out day, how likely is a deduction from your security deposit?

Low

Comes off clean when you follow the product instructions. Freestanding, leaning and tension options sit here.

Medium

Usually fine, but the surface, weight or removal can leave a mark. Test on a hidden spot first.

High

Likely to need repair (holes, peeled paint, painting). Ask your landlord in writing first.

What goes into a rating

  • The method: leaning or tension (no contact damage) → adhesives → small nails → screws, anchors and paint.
  • The surface: smooth, cured paint and tile are safest; textured, flat, fresh paint, plaster and wallpaper raise the risk.
  • The weight: we compare the item with typical product limits and add risk well before the label maximum.
  • Your lease: if it forbids a change, we rate it High no matter the method.

Why our ratings are conservative

When in doubt we round up. A Medium that turns out fine costs you nothing; a Low that peels paint can cost part of your deposit. Product weight limits and removal steps follow the manufacturers’ published instructions; we review ratings when instructions change.

What we don’t do

We don’t give legal advice, and ratings never depend on affiliate links. Whether a landlord can charge for something depends on your lease, the condition of the unit when you moved in, and your state’s law.
